Our nearest 'tourist' towns are Lucca (just under an hour’s drive), Barga (25 minutes) and Castelnuovo di Garfagnana (20 minutes); but one of the great attractions of the Garfagnana is that, although it doesn’t lack for things to see and do, it isn't spoilt by tourism.
There’s lots to see, but you're unlikely to be overwhelmed by others – except perhaps at the Grotta del Vento (a mere 6.5km away), which does attract lots of visitors in the summer.
Pisa is just over an hour and Florence only 1½ hours away; Siena is 2½; Abetone (for skiing in winter) is 45 minutes; and the coastal towns of La Spezia, Viareggio and Livorno are 1½ hours.
The 'Cinque Terre' in southern Liguria are also a 'must', and if you fancy a 3-hour drive so are the wonderful cities of Genoa (on the north Ligurian coast) and Modena, Parma and Bologna (over the Apennines in Emilia-Romagna).
Our nearest 'commercial' centre is Gallicano – a lovely medieval town in the Serchio Valley, 15 minutes’ drive from the village.
